A Passion for Teaching

I have had the amazing opportunity to be teaching since I was 13 years old! Even at an early age, children have been such a priority in my life. When we needed a Sunday School teacher for the 2-4 year old children, I said “here I am, use me.” I was given opportunities to learn and grow these skills. I also had access to some amazing adult helpers but I was the lead teacher and I have been ever since. Now at 31 years old, I have almost 2 decades worth of teaching experience under my belt. I also have a husband and 3 amazing children of my own. I am not only the lead teacher, I have worked my way up to being the Children’s Ministry Director. Some people may say “that’s just church,” but after research and schooling and interviews with school teachers, I can say that there is a lot of overlap. Between the skills I’ve gained and the schooling I’ve done, I believe I have a solid base to be able to work with children and their families in many different capacities.

An Interdisciplinary Degree

When I graduate Eastern Oregon University, I will have an Interdisciplinary Degree with minors in Psychology and Sociology/Anthropology. When I first entered college at Umpqua Community College I started with a degree in early childhood education. There was something there that just didn’t sit right with me. I didn’t want to just teach, I wanted to serve and help children and their families. Even though I had taken all the child development courses and got any and all other training I had access to, I still found myself needing some help with my own children. I was connected with a local program, the Family Development Center. That is when I discovered that this would be an excellent way to give back. After some digging I found that a human services degree could be a better fit for me, and it was! I graduated with an associates in Human Services in 2021 and now I am working on my next degree that qualifies me to work at the Family Development Center or many other helping organizations. Now the bachelors may qualify me, but there is a reason I chose interdisciplinary versus just Psychology or Sociology. In all that I do I want there to be some form of excellence. So for my degree this would allow me to bring in more perspectives and be able to see each family through a different lens. This way I can be equipped to provide maximum benefits and that is how I plan to bring that excellence.

The Future holds...

It’s hard to know what the future will hold. I have many different plans and projects in sight as options that I would love to be a part of. One being able to give back to the program that helped me and helps my community to this day. I would love to work at the Family Development Center. I would be able to help the families in my community in ways that I have experienced personally and through education. Another would be to work for another helping agency and be able to be a case manager for children or families. There are many other agencies that help and it would be amazing to be able to be a part of the help. No matter what though, I still have a ministry to run and those children hold a special place in my heart and I don’t plan to leave them any time soon.

Prioritizing children for me started early. I didn’t wait for ways to prove this. I do so now by continuing to remain loyal to my church family and those children. I also continue to join programs that allow me to serve the community. So this mom of three with a full time ministry, household to manage, and attending school full time will continue to search out ways to help.

Prioritizing children, helping families and serving my community won’t begin after graduation day. It began years ago with a 13 year old girl who saw a need and decided to fill it.
